From the bamboo forest to your home

Grow Your Own House

Cultivation and Propagation

At BAMS, we believe that every great bamboo architecture begins long before construction: it begins with planting. All this work exists because, in the past, we chose to plant bamboo — and we continue planting today. Inspired by the words of our great mentor and friend Simón Vélez, when he says "Grow your own house", we understand that the true value of bamboo is born from the continuous relationship between nature, time and human care.

BAMS actively concerns itself with the planting and propagation of multiple bamboo species on farms in Rio and Bahia, cultivating more than 20 species destined for both landscaping and material use. This commitment ensures not only quality raw materials and reliable provenance, but also the continuity of a regenerative and sustainable construction culture.

The Art of Transforming Bamboo

Value Lies in the Process

At BAMS, we believe that the excellence of the final product is born from rigorous control of the entire bamboo production chain — from the bamboo forest to final application. Each step directly influences the quality, durability and aesthetics of the material.

Careful selection of culms ensures the use of species, ages and characteristics most appropriate for each application. Cutting at the right time preserves the natural resistance of bamboo and contributes to its sustainable regeneration.

To guarantee bamboo durability, we perform biological preservation treatment, which protects against borers, fungi and insects, and then high-durability protection treatment, stabilizing the material and thus significantly extending its useful life.

Controlled drying reduces movement and cracks, ensuring dimensional stability. Proper storage prevents deformation and contamination before use. Finally, processing transforms bamboo into different construction and design possibilities — such as dressed strips, raw strips, cores or whole culms — respecting the anatomy and unique aesthetic potential of each piece.

Why Use Guadua?

Superior Technical Properties

They are considered heavy bamboos, with high density and mechanical resistance. In structural tests — compression, tension and bending — they have even surpassed steel performance. Its singularity comes from anatomy: a light tube formed by bundles of fibers compressed by nodes, which ensures enormous resistance with little mass.

Unlike other materials, bamboo doesn't fail abruptly — it deforms without breaking, offering security and reliability. This characteristic was proven in seismic resistance research conducted at the University of California, where bamboo showed the ability to resist intense seismic shocks and return to its initial state after extreme stress, consolidating its potential for permanent buildings.
